The computed tomography dose index is a commonly used radiation exposure index in X-ray computed tomography, first defined in 1981. The unit of CTDI is the gray and it can be used in conjunction with patient size to estimate the absorbed dose. The CTDI and absorbed dose may differ by more than a factor of two for small patients such as children.

It is based off of precise measurements made with a phantom. DLP is the CTDIvol x the length of the patient imaged in cm. Total DLP is the total dose added from the scan plus the planning scan (topogram or "scout"). CTDIvol: 237.49 mGy. CTDIvol: 18.47 mGy.
As expected, the larger the pitch, the lower the dose. Obviously there are disadvantages of high pitch, which are discussed in detail in the Helical CT sectio CTDIvol is an estimate of the dose deposited in the patient during one CT rotation. CTDIvol = CTDIw / Pitch As expected, the larger the pitch, the lower the dose. Obviously there are disadvantages of high pitch, which are discussed in detail in the Helical CT section. Many institutions and governing bodies use CTDI vol as a quality-control measure.
Volume Computed Tomography Dose Index (CTDIvol means a radiation dose parameter derived from the CTDIw (weighted or average CTDI given across the field of view). The formula is:CTDIvol = (N)(T)(CTDIw)/IwhereN = number of simultaneous axial scans per x-ray source rotation, T = thickness of one axial scan (mm), and
Another commonly used index is the dose-length product (DLP) which factors in the length of the scan to show overall dose output.

The volumetric CT dose index (CTDIvol), dose length product (DLP) and total DLP were considered in the 32 cm standard body phantom. Calculation of estimated effective dose (ED) was obtained by multiplying the DLP by a conversion factor [k = 0.014 mSv (mGy·cm)-1]. Mean value of CTDIvol and DLP for CCTA was 50 mGy and 825 mGy·cm.
In California, CTDIvol & DLP need to be included. Oct 5, 2020 The local DRLs expressed in terms of the 75th percentile of CTDIvol for the head, chest, and abdominal scans performed on MDCT64 were 59.32

CT Dose Reporting: Starting on July 1, 2012, new California legislation requires that specific CT scanner dose metrics be included in the radiology report, for all patients undergoing diagnostic CT scans.
Volume Computed Tomography Dose Index (CTDIvol means a radiation dose parameter derived from the CTDIw (weighted or average CTDI given across the field of view). The formula is:CTDIvol = (N)(T)(CTDIw)/IwhereN = number of simultaneous axial scans per x-ray source rotation, T = thickness of one axial scan (mm), and A scanner-specific relation between CTDIvol and peak skin dose is found as a result of the method. Clinics may apply the described method to characterize their scanners as well as to explain and define appropriate limits of mAs to avoid excessive skin exposure values for a given patient examination. The 75th percentile CTDIvol reported in this work was 9.8 mGy averaged over all reporting years.
